- preventative: removal of diseased plant part
- formative: modify canopy shape
- corrective: removal of excess shoots for light penetration and aeration
- rejuvenative: removal of most shoots to reinvigorate unproductive tree

A
- cutting out: removal of entire branch; corrective and preventive
- cutting back: removal of branch portion; formative
- stubbing: severe form of cutting back; rejuvenative

TIPS IN PRUNING
A
- sharp and proper tools
- cut close to stem without leaving stub
- disinfect tools after use
- apply fungicidal paste, paint or coal tar for large wound (>1 inch diameter)

SOLVING PRUNING PROBLEM
A
- cut in stages (smaller sections)
- cut alternate rows initially
- thin if too many shoots formed
- retain only 4-5 well spaced shoots
