Lecture 6; part one (this will be a long one) Flashcards
What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
The circulatory system facilitates the transport of oxygen and nutrient-rich to active cells and the transport of byproducts of metabolism away from cells
Components of the cardiovascular system?
- Blood
- heart
- arteries
- capillaries
- veins
Why is Plasma so important
Carries ions, nutrients, waste, gasses, hormones, and plasma proteins such as albumins, globulins, fibrinogen
What is the name for red blood cells
Erythrocytes
What is the name for white blood cells
Leukocytes
Hematocrit
% of total blood volume comprised of erythrocytes
Key health indicator
45% in males, 42% in females
What is Serum
Plasma with fibrinogen and other clotting proteins removed
Where is Erythrocytes produced
in red bone marrow
RBCs are…..
simple by design: no nucleus, few organelles including no ribosomes, no mitochondria
RBCs Contain
hemoglobin
RBC’S also do
Iron-containing protein that binds oxygen and carbon dioxide
Role in gas transport discussed further in the respiratory physiology lesson
What does a Small (7ɥm) bi-concave disk shape help with?
Increases surface area to increase oxygen and carbon dioxide diffusion
Erythropoiesis=
Production of erythrocytes
What are the two 2 circulatory systems called
- Pulmonary circulation
- Systemic circulation
define Circulation
Blood is pumped from the heart (containing 2 pairs of atria and ventricles) through a closed loop circulation containing two circuits
