Lecture 6 Joints Flashcards
What is arthrology?
The study of joints
What is a bony joint?
The fusing of two bones into one
Are suture joints movable?
No
What are the three types of fibrous joint sutures?
Serrate, Squamous, and Butt sutures
Which suture joint has an interlocking junction? Examples?
Serrate. Coronal, sagittal and lamboid sutures
Which suture joint has a junction of two bones with overlapping beveled edges? Examples?
Squamous. Squamosal suture between temporal and parietal bones
What is the name for the fribrous joint of the tooth socket? Note: PDL is part of this but is not the joint
Gomphoses
Which kind of fibrous joints makes up the interosseous membrane between bones like radius and ulna and tibia and fibula?
Syndesmoses
The costal cartilage involved in rib attachment to the sternum is what kind cartilaginous joint?
Synchondroses
What are the slightly movable cartilaginous joints?
Symphyses such as intervertebral discs and the pubic symphysis made of fibrocartilage
Which joints are the most movable type in which two bones are separated by a fluid-filled space called a joint space?
Synovial joints
Which part of the synovial joint is continuous with the periosteum?
The joint capsule
What is synovial fluid?
Viscous, slippery rich in albumin and hyaluronic acid secreted by the synovial membrane
Articular cartilages are made of what kind of cartilage?
Hyaline cartilage
What is hyaline cartilage rich in?
Chondroitin (a GAG)
What is the stabilizing rim around the joint and is present in some joints including TMJ, wrist, knee and sternoclavicular?
Meniscus of fibrocartilage
What are the major types of synovial joints?
Ball and socket, hinge, saddle, pivot, gliding, condyloid, and TMJ
What is the broad term for joint pain and inflammation?
Arthritis
What does osteoarthritis result from??
Years of joint wear or mechanical damage
When articular cartilage degenerates what develops on the exposed tissue that contributes to the symptoms o osteoarthritis?
Bone spurs
Which type of arthritis is an autoimmune attack on the joints?
Rheumatoid Arthritis
What do immune cells attack the joints with in Rheumatoid arthritis?
Antibodies and enzymes
What are tendon sheaths?
Tubes of synovial membrane that wrap around tendons as in the hand and foot
What is a bursa?
A saclike extension of a joint capsule that extends between or around nearby tendons allowing them to slide easily past each other
Where are bursae found?
Knee, shoulder, and elbow. When injured may result in bursitis
What structure is unique to the TMJ
The articular disk (tissue between glenoid fossa and mandibular condyle)
