List the 5 key nutrients to be found in a homemade feed:
- Starch/fiber source (cooked grain)
- Protein source – animal origin (If many sources, at least one animal origin)
- Fat source
- Source of minerals, definitely Ca
- Multivitamin and trace mineral source
If no meat is fed what definitely needs to be present?
eggs
Eggs must be cooked for a min. of 1 min to avoid salmonellosis.
Protein and carbs ratio that should be fed to
dogs
cats
dogs 1:2 – 1:3 of feed weight
cats 1:1 – 1:2 (?) of feed weight
Ca carbonate requirements for,
cats
dogs
0,5 g Ca for a 4,5 kg cat per day
at least 2 g Ca for a 15 kg dog per day
If not enough meat, what should be added
Phosphorus must be added
Enough meat is 1:1 meat/carbs source ratio.
Cat Taurine requirement
200-500 mg taurine per day
How to feed meat and eggs:
must be cooked! due to food-borne pathogens.
Animals can tolerate pathogens a bit better than humans but more importantly if they catch something they can shed it to their human family members.
Freezing and freeze drying does not kill pathogens.
