Lecture 4 - Feeding & energy density Flashcards
define energy density
amount of calories in a certain amount of food
given in ME/kg, ME/g, kJ/kg
what does balanced mean when describing food?
Right proportions of nutrients
what does digestibility mean when describing food?
portion that is absorbed and not excreted
Recommended min. Protein content of food in percentage DM?
10% - 18% of food DM
What % of ME should be obtained from protein?
24% of ME should be obtained from protein
(don’t confuse with 10% - 18% of food DM)
Recommended minimum fat content of feed DM in %?
5,5%
What % of ME should be obtained from fat?
38%
(dont confuse with 5,5% min. fat content of feed DM)
Recommended maximum % of digestible carbs in feed DM?
Recommended maximum is 50% DC of feed DM.
What % of ME should be obtained from carbohydrates
38%
(dont confuse with Recommended maximum digestible carbs of feed DM is 50%)
DC in dog feeds is typically between what %/ME?
40- 50 %/ME
Basic Fast and slow twitch muscles
Type I
◼ Slow (100 milliseconds)
◼ Shorter
◼ Low ability of glycolysis
◼ High oxidation ability
◼ Lots of mitochondria - aerobic metabolism
Type II (IID, IIC)
◼ Fast (25-50 milliseconds)
◼ Longer
◼ Rely on anaerobic glycolysis
◼ Better oxidation than in human fast twitch muscles
During the 1st 4 weeks of canine pregnancy, the dam requires how much energy?
No extra, no different than usual.
During the 2nd half of canine pregnancy, the dam requires how much energy?
ME = 132 kcal/kg BW0.75 + 26 kcal/kg BW
So plus 26 kcal/kg of body weight.
When to start feeding unweaned puppies soft food?
introduce At 3-4 weeks old
from 6 weeks the feed can be more solid feed
Complete weaning 7 weeks
newborn puppy energy requirement
25 kcal/100 g BW
