Lecture 6 - Experiments Flashcards
What do we call a test under controlled conditions?
An experiment
What is a cause?
A factor that is requered for an effect
What is the difference between a fact and a counterfact called?
Effect
How can we describe a casual relationship?
It is a link between a cause and an effect
What variable consists of a cause and a manipulated variable?
Independent Variable
What variable consists of effect and that is measured by the experimenter?
Dependent Variable
What is a hypotheses?
A precise problem statement that can be directly tested through an empirical investigation
What are the design points in an experiment?
Unique combinations of independent variable settings
What is the process of creating a model called?
Simulation
What are the four key aspects of simulations?
- Modeling
- Manipulation
- Analysis
- Prediction
What are examples of test conditions?
Levels, Values, Settings
What can be said about Confounding varible?
Not controlled. Bad. We don’t want
What variable is kept constant while testing the effect of an independent variable?
Control Variable
What happens when the Control Variable is very controlled?
The experiment becomes less generalizable (Less applicable to other situations)
What is it called when each participant is tested on each condition?
Within-subjects
What is it called when each participant is tested on one condition only?
Between-subjects
When are Order Effects relevant?
For within-subjects factors
How can we counterbalance Order Effects?
- Divide participants into groups
- Administer test conditions in a different order to each group
How many participants should an experiment have?
Same number as used in similar research
What does a procedure encompass?
Everything that occurs with participants
How do we test usability in product or service?
We give them a couple of scenarios that lead the task and usage of specific interest within the product or service
