Lecture 1/2 (Types of research) Flashcards
What are the three approaches commonly used in IS/IT research?
- Action Research
- Design Science Research
- Technical Action Research
What are some descriptors of Action Research?
- Research method of studying technology in social contexts
- A way to support practitioners through development and application of knowledge
What is an Artifact?
- Something created by human beings
- Can have social properties
What is Design Action Research?
Research methodology used primarily in information systems. It focuses on creating innovative artifacts to solve complex problems or improve existing systems.
What is Technical Action Research?
The researcher wants to learn something about a technique by using it to solve a clients problem. This is an approached used often in technical fields such as engineering or computer science.
What are the three roles in Technical Action Research?
- Designer: Designing a technique
- Helper: Using the technique to help others
3: Researcher: Drawing lessons learned about the technique in application
How does Action research and Technical Action research differ?
AR is problem-driven and TAR is technology-driven, focused on solving a class of problems.
What are 5 definitions of good research?
- Originality - Knowledge contributions
- Reliability - Producing results that can be trusted
- Comminicability - Results should be structured in a way that is easy to follow and understand.
- Relevance - Results should be relevant to research and practice
- Rigor - Research was conducted is a scientifiacally and systematically sound way
What are 4 points of Ethics in good research?
- Reliability
- Honesty
- Respect
- Accountability
