Lecture 6-Arterial Supply To The Brain Flashcards
Which arteries form the posterior circulation of the brain?
Vertebral arteries
Which arteries form the anterior circulation of the brain?
Internal carotid arteries
Which branches does the internal carotid artery give rise to?
Middle cerebral artery and anterior cerebral artery
Which area does the middle cerebral artery supply?
Lateral aspects of the frontal and parietal lobes and superior aspect of temporal lobe
Which area does the anterior cerebral artery supply?
Medial portions of the frontal and parietal lobes
What is the basilar artery?
Fusion of two vertebral arteries
What does the basilar artery bifurcate into and what do these arteries supply?
Two posterior cerebral arteries -> occipital lobe and posterior part of temporal lobe
What is the Circle of Willis and which arteries form it?
Allows collateral supply in case there is a blockage somewhere
Posterior communicating arteries connect posterior circulation and anterior circulation and anterior communicating artery connects two anterior cerebral arteries
What does the anterior spinal artery supply?
Anterior 2/3 of the spinal cord
What do the pontine branches of the basilar artery supply?
Pons
What are the cerebellar arteries and what do they cross?
Superior cerebellar, posterior inferior cerebellar, anterior inferior cerebellar cross brainstem to cerebellum and therefore supply the brainstem
What are the lenticulostriate arteries branches of?
Middle cerebral arteries
Which artery are susceptible to emboli and why?
Lenticulostriate arteries because small lumen
