Lecture 6 Flashcards

1
Q

What are the physical and chemical growth requirements for microbes?

A

Physical- Temp., pH, Osmotic Pressure, Hydrostatic Pressure
Chemical- carbon (DNA, proteins, carbohydrate, fat)
-nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur (DNA/protein)
-trace elements (chemical reactions & enzyme co-factors)
-oxygen (energy production/respiration)

Q

How will microbial growth be affected if *Temperature increases or decreases? Think about the protein and Lipids

A
( Protein:)
High Temp= denatures protein
Low Temp= reduces protein activity
( Lipids: )
Low Temp.= become rigid and fragile
High Temp= become too fluid and cannot contain the cell or organelle
