lecture 6 Flashcards
what is community
interactions of all species, exchanging nutrients
what is ecological niche accoriding to Hutchison
abiotic environment and the species role in it
what is fundamental and realized niche
fundamental, where the specie’s habitat is with all abiotic resources
realized, with negative interactions, smaller than fundamental
what is phylogenic niche conservatism
niches that are similar because of shared ancestors
resource partitioning
splitting resources so that species can co-exist
what is intraspecific and interspecific interaction
intraspecific - density dependent, competition with same species
interspecific, competition with others
what is the experiment on exploitation in diatoms
synedra and adreniolla
what is competition
both use resource in the same way, can lead to co-existence or competitive exclusion
what is exploitation and interference
exploitation - one gets to resource first
interference, fighting for resource
what is competitive exclusion principle
two or more species cannot use same resource for a long period of time
what is the r rule
whoever can survive with lower levels of resource will survive longer
how does co-existence work
the better competitor stays in lower numbers so that the weaker does not become outcompeted
what is predator mediated coexistence
third party keeps the predator’s numbers low
what is character displacement
species specializing in different foods and niches
what is predation
one benefits from eating another
grazing - does not eat the entire thing at one time
parasites, long mutualism, attack little of the prey
