lecture 6- Flashcards
stress
what is stressor
this is any stimuli that challenge the homeostasis of the body and triggers a response it can be real, imagined
a stress response
this is the body’s response to the challenge of the stressor. it often causes phsyiological or behavioral changes that attempts to help the body cope with stress.
what are two things that a stress response does to the body.
It temporarily puts the brain and the body into overdrive to help deal with stress and it temporarily suspends growth, repair, and construction in the body to save energy
who first characterized the concept of stress
Hans Selye
explain the general adaptation syndrome for stress
- alarm -activates the sns
- resistance- hPa and cortisol physiological adaptations
- exhaustion- depleted physiological resources - diseases can occur
what are the two pathways that the body uses to deal with stressors.
SAM AXIS - SYMPATHO-ADRENOMEDULLARY AXIS
HPA AXIS - HYPOTHALAMIC- PITUITARY- ADRENAL AXIS
What stages of the general adaptation syndrome does the SAM and hpa axis mediate respectively
sam - initial stage
hpa - mediates resistance stage
explain the sam axis and the hpa axis
