Lecture 6 Flashcards
What are the two stages of growth in synchronous cultures of viruses?
Eclipse phase
Maturation phase
Describe the tree basic steps of a virus’ life cycle
- They attach and penetrate the host cell
- They uncoat themselves releasing the nucleic acid and allowing protein synthesis to occur.
- Then they reassemble and exit
Describe the eclipse phase in a virus’ life cycle
Low amounts of parental infectious material are present.
Genome replication has been initiated
Duration is minutes perhaps hours
Describe the maturation phase of a virus
Viral material accumulates in the cell or surrounding medium
Cells infected with lytic viruses can continue to produce indefinately
What are the three types of viral infection?
Productive
Abortive
Restringent or restrictive
What is productive infection?
Entry by a virus into a permissive cell which is followed by virion formation
What is abortive infection?
Entry into a non-permissive cell which does not result in virion formation
What does influenza do if abortive infection occurs?
It releases an enzyme to escape from the cell
What is restringent or restrictive infection?
Cell is transiently permissive and a few virus are produced
What is the antireceptor if the infleunza virus?
Haemaglutinin
What is tropism?
The turning of all or part of an organism in a particular direction in response to an external stimuli
Is attachment energy dependent?
No
Is uptake energy dependent?
Yes
What is uncoating of a virus?
A term applied to events after penetration of a host cell
