Explain the foundation of the Fonofale Model
- represents family which is the foundation for all PI cultures
- can be nuclear as well as extended or constituted family (bound by kinship, titles, marriage, partnership or convenant agreement)
Explain the roof of the Fonofale Model
- represents cultural values and beliefs that shelters the family for life
- culture is dynamic and therefore constantly evolving / adapting
Explain the Pou of the Fonofale Model represent
- found between the foundation and roof; connect the family and the culture (continuous and interactive with each other)
What are the 4 pou of the Fonofale Model?

Explain the ‘Spiritual’ pou of the Fonofale Model
relates to the sense of well-being which stems from a belief system (i.e. Christianity, traditional spirituality, etc.)
Explain the ‘Physical’ pou of the Fonofale Model
relates to biological or physical well-being
Explain the ‘Mental’ pou of the Fonofale Model
relates to the well-being/health of the mind which involves thinking, emotions, behaviours expressed, etc.
Explain the ‘Other’ pou of the Fonofale Model
relates to various variables that can directly/indirectly affect health (i.e. gender, sexuality/sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status)

Define Religion

Define Spirituality
- belief in a higher power, an awareness of life and its meaning, the centering of a person with a purpose in life
- involves relationships with a higher being, with self, and with the individual
- active presence of God in human life
What are some needs that spirituality fulfils?
- healing strength and support
- meaning to life, illness, crises, and death
- guides daily habits
- sense of security for present and future
Define Spiritual Care
recognising and responding to the various expressions of spirituality we encounter in our patients/families
Purpose of Spiritual Care
determine the nature of a person’s relationship to God and other people, and to give the person the opportunity to accept spiritual support
How can you incorporate spiritual care?
- involve chaplains as members of interdisciplinary healthcare team
- listening to patients’ fears, hopes, pains, dreams
- practice of compassionate presence
Define Culture
set of shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterises a particular society- language, behaviours, beliefs, values, etc.
