lecture 6 Flashcards
what is the overgeneralization theory
Recognizing emotional cues → survival (fight or flight) → anger cues → danger situation → threat
Superficial cues remind you of threat, you overgeneralize an expression when someone has a resting face, person is not really angry
Theory goes for all facial expressions
what is the second overgeneralization theory
BABYFACENESS
Recognizing babies → survival of genes (make sure baby of tribe survive) → weak warm (baby is weaker and warmer)
People overgeneralize this cue
Overgeneralize: adults with babyface → weak, warm
what is the 3rd overgeneralized featured
ATTRACTIVENESS
Recognizing fitness (how well your genes are) → survival of genes → mate, desire
Overgeneralize: attractive people → fit → desirable
what is the Attractiveness halo effect
attractive people are better personality, kinder, stereotype for people who are beautiful, people relate that to positive stereotypes
whats the 4th overgeneralized feature
Familiarity
Recognizing familiar people → kinship → safe, trust
Overgeneralization: People look familiar → trustworthy
what is the trait perception from body
Generating a figure of different body types/shapes
Ask people how terms apply to the body type (quiet, reserved, shy, warm, enthusiastic)
Made a factor analysis of the bodies to understand which features of body shift trait perception the most
what is the Trait perception from context study
Color intensity increases perceived extraversion and openness for zero acquaintance judgements
Study 1
Generating stimuli: having a person in 2 different background colors
More intense/saturated color are seen as more extraverted/open
Next study
show picture of someone with clothes of different color intensities
High saturated/intense are seen as more extraverted/open
