lecture 2 Flashcards
what is kurt lewins equation that determines behavior?
Grand Truism
B = f (P, E)
what does lewins equation stand for?
P = factors internal to person
E = factors in external environment
what are the 2 cultures in psychology?
Personality: B = f(P):
- Traits, Attitudes, Emotions
- Environment as Noise to be averaged out (EX: twin studies that focus on a specific gene)
Social psychology: B = f(E):
- Physical & Social Environment
- Experiment on environment and effect on behavior
- Person as noise to be averaged out
what is ANOTHER culture in psychology?
Behaviorism: B = f (E)
what are the 2 forms of social behavior
- Serves as stimulus
- Response to stimulus
what are the differences between
Social Psychology and Behaviorism?
B = Observable Behavior Only and Thoughts, Feeling, Behavior
E = Measurable Environment Only
and Perceived Environment
what is the helping experiment?
- you are much more likely to seek help if you are alone rather than if you are in a group
- this is not evidence that this is situationism and doesn’t have to do with only the environment
- they directly asked someone - “what were you thinking when you saw smoke” (fear, lack of skillsLack of Skills diffusion of responsibility, look to others for cues)
what is something lewin thought about his “Grand Truism”
- Lewin thought they influenced each other at first and did not see that they were independent
- saw P and E in this formula are interdependent variables
a person can change environment by…
- Evocation (presence of social object)
- Selection (you choose to be in any environment)
- Behavioral Manipulation (do something to change environment)
- Cognitive Activity
what are some examples on how environment can change person
- color of rooms change a person’s feelings
- correlation with heat and anger
