Lecture 5.2: Anterior and Posterior Arm Flashcards
Overview of Arm (Bone? Compartments? Muscles? Nerves?)
- 1 Bone: Humerus
- 2 compartments (Flexor/Anterior and Extensor/Posterior)
- 4 arm muscles ()
- 2 nerves (Radial and Musculocutaneous)
What part of the arm is supplied by the Musculocutaneous Nerve?
Anterior Compartment/ Flexors
What part of the arm is supplied by the Radial Nerve?
Posterior Compartment/ Extensors
What muscles are part of the Anterior Arm Compartment?
• Biceps Brachii:
1) Long head 2) Short head
- Brachialis
- Coracobrachialis
What muscles are part of the Posterior Arm Compartment?
Triceps brachii:
1) Long head 2) Lateral head 3) Medial head
Muscles of Anterior Arm Compartment: Biceps Brachii
- Short Head and Long Head
- Distal attachment —> Radial Tuberosity
Acts on:
• Shoulder: Flexion
• Elbow: Flexion and supination
Muscles of Anterior Arm Compartment: Brachialis
- Primary flexor at the elbow joint
* Attaches distally on tuberosity of ulna
Muscles of Anterior Arm Compartment: Coracobrachialis
- Coracoid —> Mid-Humerus
- Pierced by Musculocutaneous Nerve
Acts on Glenohumeral Joint:
• Flexion
• Adduction
Where does the Long Head of Bicep Attach?
What is a Popeye Deformity?
- Rupture of the tendon of the long head of the biceps
- Torn from attachment at the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula
- Detached muscle belly forms a ball.
What causes a Popeye Deformity?
Wear and tear of muscle/ tendon
Muscles of Posterior Arm Compartment: Triceps Brachii
- Long, Medial and Lateral Head
- Shoulder & elbow extension
- Radial n.
Posterior Arm Compartment: Quadrangular Space
Axillary nerve & posterior circumflex arteries travel through here and around the surgical neck of humerus
Posterior Arm Compartment: Triangular Interval & Spiral Groove
Radial nerve & profunda artery travel through space and groove
Posterior Arm Compartment: Triangular Space
Circumflex scapular artery
