Lecture 5 - Variation in population size Flashcards
1
Q
What is Lag phase?
A
- Low population
- Low reproductive rates/getting used to environment
- Slow growth
2
Q
What is log phase (Exponential Growth)?
A
- Plenty of resources
- Reproductive rate is higher than mortality
- Rapid increase in population
3
Q
What is carrying capacity (Stationary Phase)?
A
- Maximum population size that can be maintained
- Reproductive and mortality rate is equal
- Small fluctuations in population size due to environment
4
Q
What is Death or Decline Phase?
A
- Mortality rate higher than reproductive rates
5
Q
What are Abiotic factor?
A
- Non-living parts of the environment
6
Q
What are the 4 main abiotic factors
A
- Temperature (optimum)
- Light (photosynthesis)
- pH (enzymes)
- Water and humidity (transpiration)
7
Q
What are biotic factors?
A
Living components of an ecosystem and can affect one another
8
Q
What are limiting factors?
A
- Natural process affected by a number of factors, limiting factor is the one whose magnitude limits rate of process.
