Lecture 1 - Investigating Populations Flashcards
1
Q
What is a habitat?
A
the place where an organism lives
2
Q
What is a community
A
- All the populations of different species that live in the same place at the same time
- Can interact with each other
3
Q
What is abundance?
A
the number of individuals of a given species in a given space
4
Q
What is distribution?
A
the presence or absence of a particular species
5
Q
What factors are required to consider with Quadrats
A
- Where to place Quadrats
- How many samples to take
- Size of quadrat
6
Q
How to avoid bias in Sampling?
A
- Using Random Sampling by throwing quadrat
- Laying out two tape measure along two sides of study area and obtain a series of coordinates by using random numbers.
- Place a quadrat at intersections of each pair of coordinates and record the species within it.
7
Q
What is transect?
A
- Systematic approach
- Line taken across a habitat
- Samples taken at regular intervals along line
- Allows changes in vegetation to be recorded
8
Q
What is line transect?
A
- Line marked by tape measure at equal intervals, species must touch the tape.
9
Q
What is a belt transect?
A
- Quadrat is placed next to the line at regular intervals (interrupted) or moved along the line so the whole length is sampled (continuous)
10
Q
What is frequency?
A
likelihood of species occurring in Quadrat.
11
Q
What is percentage cover?
A
estimate of the area within a quadrat that a particular plant species cover.
