Who famously disagreed with Calvin about predestination?
James Arminius, Simon Episcopius and the Remonstrants
What is the “horrible decree”?
Calvin’s phrase for God actively choosing to reject some individuals to receive salvation.
Define prevenient grace.
The Arminian concept of a universal, though resistible, grace that makes possible faith in God.
Define soteriology.
Soteriology is the study of the doctrine of salvation.
What did the Calvinists believe about God foreseeing future events?
God foresees future events because he has decreed them.
What did Calvin believe about predestination?
God has chosen some individuals to be saved (the elect), and actively chosen some to be reprobate (damned).
Define inspiration.
Inspiration speaks of the Holy Spirit’s work in the process of influencing the writers of Scripture and the recording of Scripture.
Give the Arminian position on atonement.
Atonement is universal; Christ died for everyone, including those who reject him.
Define regeneration.
Regeneration is an event that happens by the Holy Spirit, “being born again”.
Define paracelete.
Paracelete means counselor, comforter, helper, or advocate. The term is mainly used for the Holy Spirit but also for Jesus.
Give the Arminian position reprobation.
There is no divine reprobation. People lose out of heaven based on their own actions.
Give the Arminian position on election.
God’s election depends upon God’s foreknowledge of whether a person will accept the gospel message.
Define blasphemy.
Blasphemy is the act of speaking against, slandering, or insulting someone.
