Lecture 5: Spinocerebellar Pathway Flashcards
What info does the spinocerebellar pathway transmit?
Unconscious proprioception to cerebellum
Clarke’s Column
C8-L3; where first order spinocerebellar neurons synapse in that area
How do spinocerebellar neurons below L3 run in the spinal cord?
They run in the fasciculus gracillis until they synapse in L2/L3
How do spinocerebellar neurons above C8 run in the spinal cord?
They run in the fasciculus cuneatus until synapse in accessory cuneate nucleus
How do 2nd order spinocerebellar neurons in Clarke’s column get to the cerebellum?
Run ipsilaterally into cerebellum via inferior peduncle
How do neurons from the accessory cuneate nucleus get to the cerebellum?
Ipsilaterally through the inferior cerebellar peduncle
What types of nerves innervate golgi tendon organs?
1b
Golgi tendon organs
Sense muscle tension or change in tension; sit in tendons at end of muscles
What types of nerves innervate muscle spindles?
1a- muscle length and change in length, II- muscle length, gamma motor fibers- changes length of spindle to better match muscle length
How do intrafusal muscle spindles work?
Tension causes mechanoreceptors send action potentials on nerves
Static nuclear bag fibers
Sense muscle length only; innervated by 1a and II
Dynamic nuclear bag fibers
Sense change in muscle length; 1a only
Nuclear chain fibers
Sense muscle length only; Innervated by 1a and II
Type II muscle fibers
Only respond to muscle length
Type 1a muscle fibers
Respond to muscle length and change in length
