What occurs in Assimilation?
Adjacent sounds become more alike
What are the two types of Assimilation?
- Progressive (preservatory) assimilation
* Regressive (anticipatory) assimilation
What occurs in Progressive (preservatory) assimilation?
A sound becomes more like the preceding segment
What occurs is Regressive (anticipatory) Assimilation?
Sounds become more like the following segment
What does a ring under a letter mean?
Devoicing of a usually voiced segment
What does a squiggle over top of a letter mean?
Indicates a sound becoming more nasal
What is common type of assimilation?
Voicing assimilation
What occurs in Dissimilation?
Adjacent sounds become less alike
What is flapping?
When alveolar stops [t] and [d] become flaps [round r] after a stressed vowel and before an unstressed syllable
What is Deletion?
Processes which we eliminate a sound
What is Epenthesis (Insertion)?
Processes which add a sound
What is Metathesis?
Reordering of sounds
What is Vowel Reduction?
A process that reduces a full vowel, typically unstressed to a schwa
What does ^h mean?
Aspiration which is a puff of air after voiceless stops [p], [t], [k]
What does a o under a letter mean?
Devoicing of a usually voiced segment
What does a line under a letter mean?
It indicates the stressed syllable
What does a dash over top a line indicate?
A stressed vowel
