What is the purpose of feedback?
- to let someone know what they are doing well
- to let someone know what they can improve on (encourages reciever to self-reflect and want to encourage and motivate)
Summative evaluation
annual performance review, manager evaluates and gives you feedback
Verbal vs. Written feedback
want to do it close to when the event happens, can be formal or informal
What is the “Feedback Sandwich”
How to give constructive critism
1. positive comments about situation
2. praise persons strong points
3. Give critism
4. remind person of strong points
5. offer support in the areas for improvement and leave on a positive note
*positive, critism, positive
What are the pros and cons of Feedback Sandwich?
- positive comments, more open to receving criticism
- criticism might not resonate because there was alot of positive things said and reciever might not know what exactly they are suppose to work on
Tip for informal feedback
provide at the time the event happens or shortly after the event if possible; provide feedback close to the event
Tips for Giving Effective Feedback
- remove judgement and personal biases; focus on the facts
- be honest, sincere and empathetic
- provide in “small doses”
- face to face, private setting
- strive for a mix of constructive and positive feedback
- try to use “I” vs. “You”
- Be specific in feedback message
What are some barriers to effective feedback?
- hard to do
- worrying about damaging relationships
- you are afraid of how the person will react to your feedback
- if feedback for your boss, power difference
- lack of training and experience in giving feedback
- lack of time
