Radiation Laws (5)

A
#1 EMISSION OF RADIATION
all substances emit radiation as long as their temperature is above absolute zero
 (-273.15*c or 0 K)
#2 BLACKBODY & PLANCK
the sun is very simialr to an "ideal emitter" (or "Black Body") "The shorter the wavelength, the greater the intensity of the energy flux"
#3 THE STEFAN-BOLTZMANN LAW
if the substance is an ideal emitter (black body) the total amount of radiation given off is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature.
#4 TEMPERATURE AND WAVELENGTH
as the substance get hotter the wavelength at which radiation is emitted will become shorter
#5 SELECTIVE EMISSION AND ABSORPTION
some substances emit and absorb radiation at certain wavelengths only [mainly true of gases]

Q

green house effect

A

originally the sun emits radiation and some meets surface and is re-radiated outward and bounces again and even less is re-emitted so over all more heat espaces out into sppace

human enhanced GHE makes more re-emmited and re-radiated heat and has less heat escaping into space

Q

How are humans causing global warming

A

by adding more CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere we are enhancing the GHE
