Lecture #5 [Climate Controls] Flashcards
Radiation
electromagnetic waves, classified by wavelength
Longwave= lower energy
Shortwave= higher energy
1 EMISSION OF RADIATION
all substances emit radiation as long as their temperature is above absolute zero
(-273.15*c or 0 K)
Radiation Laws (5)
#1 EMISSION OF RADIATION all substances emit radiation as long as their temperature is above absolute zero (-273.15*c or 0 K)
#2 BLACKBODY & PLANCK the sun is very simialr to an "ideal emitter" (or "Black Body") "The shorter the wavelength, the greater the intensity of the energy flux"
#3 THE STEFAN-BOLTZMANN LAW if the substance is an ideal emitter (black body) the total amount of radiation given off is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature.
#4 TEMPERATURE AND WAVELENGTH as the substance get hotter the wavelength at which radiation is emitted will become shorter
#5 SELECTIVE EMISSION AND ABSORPTION some substances emit and absorb radiation at certain wavelengths only [mainly true of gases]
3 THE STEFAN-BOLTZMANN LAW
if the substance is an ideal emitter (black body) the total amount of radiation given off is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature.
4 TEMPERATURE AND WAVELENGTH
as the substance get hotter the wavelength at which radiation is emitted will become shorter
5 WEIN’S LAW
if the object is hot [sun] its max amount of radiation at shorter wavelengths - the opposite is true for cold
4 TEMPERATURE AND WAVELENGTH
as the substance get hotter the wavelength at which radiation is emitted will become shorter
if the object is hot [sun] its max amount of radiation at shorter wavelengths - the opposite is true for cold
5 SELECTIVE EMISSION AND ABSORPTION
some substances emit and absorb radiation at certain wavelengths only [mainly true of gases]
Shorter wave lengths and higher radiation intensity is related to which type of emissions
high frequency
short wavelength
higher energy and hotter temp
SO VISIBLE AND ULTRAVIOLET
longer wave lengths and lower rad. intensity is related to which type of emissions
low frequency, long wavelength, lower energy and cool temp
SO INFRARED
green house effect
originally the sun emits radiation and some meets surface and is re-radiated outward and bounces again and even less is re-emitted so over all more heat espaces out into sppace
human enhanced GHE makes more re-emmited and re-radiated heat and has less heat escaping into space
How are humans causing global warming
by adding more CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere we are enhancing the GHE
