Lecture 5: Carbon and Macromolecules Flashcards
How many bonds does carbon make?
4, tetrahedral and flat structures.
Lipids?
lipids store energy, insulate and protect, digest and absorb, nutrients, and hormone production.
Lipids have variable structures?
Have both hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics in a single molecule.
Fatty acids?
Fatty acids combine with glycerol which is related to glucose to form oils and fat molecules.
Structure of a phospholipid
Has a hydrophilic head which contains choline, phosphate and glycerol. It has hydrophobic tails and a kink in the tail due to the cis double bond.
DNA?
Essential for inheritance of genetic traits and involve components of nucleic acids that are covalently bonded together in a stable structure called ‘strand’.
