Lecture 5 and 6 - Archae Flashcards
Explain how archae adapt to high saline environments
Archaea adapt to high saline environments by primarily preventing salt from translocating inside or through excretion. There are high levels of K and Cl to counter the presence of Na and Cl. Therefore they accumulate compatible solutes to prevent water loss.
How do archae regulate depth in water what are they in search for?
Haloarchaea regulate depth in water using gas vesicles due to alteration in food or light source.
Describe the biochemical process of methanogens
Methanogens are microorganisms that produce methane as a metabolic byproduct in anoxic conditions belonging to archaea. They are strict anaerobes utilising anaerobic respiration reducing sulfate and nitrate
