Q

What are the main categories of fungal infection? Describe all with example.

A

The three main categories are superficial mycoses, cutaneous mycoses and systemic/deep mycoses. Superficial mycoses is infection of the skin or hair shafts it often does not cause response from host an example is Tinea Versicolour. Cutaneous mycoses is infection of the skin or hair shafts however it results in a change of physiological response from host. The fungi can produce metabolites that are inflammatory to skin leading to inflammation (Tinea, Athlete’s foot). Deep mycoses includes Meningitis where it infects systemic organs such as site and CNS.

Q

What are the sites of treatment for fungal infection? Give example of Fungal microbial.

A

There are three main sites associated with the treatment of fungal infection. Polyenes are integrated into the cell membrane, 5-Fluorocytosine interrupt DNA/RNA synthesis and Azoles are used to interrupt the steroid biosynthesis in cell membrane.
