the tendency to weigh others’ interest against your own
What are the 2 aspects that Agreeableness can be broken down into?
compassion
politeness
What are people who are high in compassion interested in?
others’ needs and problems, sympathetic and generous with their time, and more likely to take the interests of others into account
What are people who are high in politeness like?
have respect for authority
not pushy or insulting
careful with their words
What is the purpose of Agreeableness?
to solve the social problem of how much to weigh your own interests against those of others
What is the risk of High Agreeableness?
agreeable people can become resentful or passive-aggressive
What do clinical psychologist use to combat high levels of agreeableness?
assertiveness training to help patients learn to put their own interests forward
What is the risk of high agreeableness in parents?
if too self-sacrificing, children don’t develop enough autonomy
Why are parents waiting longer to have children?
have more resources available to over-structure their childrens’ lives
are more conscientious and agreeable (traits that increase with age)
are favoring less risky strategies when raising children
Why is it important for children to have siblings?
siblings play an important role in the development of social behaviors, including autonomy
