Lecture 5 Flashcards
What is Ohm’s law?
This law describes that Current is equal to the voltage divided by the resistance
What is conductance?
conductance is the ease of flow
conductance and resistance are reciprocals
What is required for a resting membrane potential?
- a semi-permeable membrane
- a concentration gradient of ions across a membrane
- a pathway for charged ions to flow across the membrane
What is the steady state model?
A constant pumping and leakage which results in uneven distribution of key ions across the membrane
What is a electrochemical gradient?
The movement of ions based on a concentration difference and a charge difference
The nernst equation
-60/z x log (inside- outside)
This equation shows the direct relationship between energy or potential of a cell and its ions.
in equilibrium, the answer would be 0
What is the ion potential of Na
+60
what is the potential of K
-83
what is the potential of Ca
+129
what is the potential for Cl-
-66
What is Vm or membrane potential?
this is the net effect of all charge movements taking place across the membrane
What is E ion?
A calculated potential that would be generated across the membrane if that ions species were the only conductance present
The goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation
This equation takes into account all of the ions that are permeant across a membrane.
Driving force equation
Driving force is equal to Vm - Em
if Vm is -83 mV and the ion is K…. what is the driving force?
(-83) - (-83) = 0
no driving force
