Pet shops;

  • there is licensing and inspections
  • there is a minimum standard of care and handling of the animals
  • staff training if required
  • sometimes there is a restriction on breed which can be sold
  • there is a certain way apply force
  • pet shops are to promote responsible pet ownership via choosing the most appropriate pet and supply them with the necessary information

legislation for aggressive dog
-Breed specific legislation which deals with dog fighting and dog bites
UK dangerous dogs act 1991; which is breed specific and has strict provisions (all entire and unmicrochipped dogs should be out down)
-Australian animal management bill 2008; dogs should be controlled in pubic, keep in appropriated areas,
dogs which are dangerous and restricted should be desexed within 3 months
muzzled in public places

A

Restricted dogs
certain breeds are not allowed in Australia this is only for pure-breds
some examples are
dogo argentino
tosa Inu
American pit bull terrier etc.
as a vet if you see a restricted dog you must report it

A

dangerous dog legislation isn’t the same as restricted breed regulations
any dog may be declared dangerous under Se 33E of the Australian dog act, dog breed and size doesn’t come into it

  • a dog can be menacing on the same grounds as a dangerous dog but the attack wasn’t serious
  • a dog can be declared as dangerous if the attack was serious

-dog meat is said to give a special health giving properties
-common in some asian cultures (China)
in these asian countries
-its actually illegal but there is no enforced law and therefore the illegal dog and cat meat trade occurs
