Lecture 4 Flashcards
List the 5 classes of behavioural problems
5 classes of behavioural problems
behaviours indicative of difficulty adapting to environmental challenge;
-problems with movement; lameness due to track conditions
-Behaviour associated with lack of resource; dog sitting in done by sows because of confinement
-behaviour associated with lack of social or sexual partner, situation may induce stereotypes and abnormal sexual and maternal behaviour
-frustration of behavioural output; outbreaks of aggression and tail biting in pigs may occur when automatic systems fail
-lack of stimulation and overstimulation; like wool abetting and may lead to aggression
Discuss movement prevention
Movement prevention
if animals are prevented from showing certain behaviours, they may change their movements
-stereotypes
-partial normal behaviour (excessive grooming)
Discuss motivation
Motivation;
animals perform normal behaviours to satisfy motivations
-appetitive
consummatory
Explain the chicken pecking example of redirected behaviour
Examples of redirected behaviour;
feather pecking in poultry
chickens will peck the feathers and skins of other bird,
this will redirect dust bathing behaviour and redirect foraging behaviour
List the 3 types of development of stereotypes
Development of stereotypes
- they may develop due to a strong motivation and the environment does let the animal switch off the motivation of the behaviour
- there can be -ve feedback which increases the behaviour
- if the stimulus is rewarded this will increase the behaviour causing a stereotype
