lecture 5 Flashcards
Craniometry
Standardised anatomical points on the skull with standardised names, between which we measure distances. Points are defined slightly differently by different authors, so we always quote the author (e.g. Martin 1928; Brothwell 1981). The points are often on:
- at the junctions of sutures
- areas of muscle attachments
Cranial morphometry
- a straight line connecting two points (chord); we measure it with a sliding caliper or cephalometer
- the distance between two points on the surface of the bone (arc); we measure it with a tape measure
Geometric morphometry
- distance between coordinates in three- or two- dimensional space (subtenses) (in the
picture); we measure it with a coordinate caliper or with use of 3D scanners
Primary dentin
Deposited while the tooth root is forming
Secondary dentin
- Begins to be deposited after the tooth root is formed
- Is deposited more slowly than primary dentin, gradually throughout life
Tetriary dentin
- Is a result of an injury
- It is applied locally under a mechanical stimulus next to the tooth cavity
- Results in a reduction of the tooth cavity
