lecture 5 Flashcards
What is the Lotka-Volterra model.
it describes the relationship between preditor and prey for when the population of prey is high, the population of predators will increase
Boom- Bust cycle
Describe predator pit topography?
it is a theory that depends upon predators maintaining low-densities via density-dependent predation.
Creates balancing points
Balancing or breakout of prey
how do prey prevent predation
- swarm
- avoid
- hide/camouflage
- deterrent mechanisms, spines, poisons, colouration.
What is optimal foraging theory
- food gives energy, but costs time and energy to aquire.
- predicts prey strategy
- prey choice
how do whales keep track of time?
water temperature, and memory.
how do whales Geolocate?
hypothesized that whales have Geomagnetic particles in the brain gathered from iron nutrients.
what is Intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH)?
States that an intermediate level os disturbance is important for the success of an ecosystem.
Give some examples of disturbance in an ecosystem
predation, fire, natural hazards.
What is competitive exclusion principle?
an ecosystem wont have more than one species that does the same thing, (eating, habitat)
what is the only explanation for why the Competitive exclusion principle happens?
Intermediate Disturbance Theory
