Lecture 48 Flashcards
What is natural immunity?
- acquired through normal life experiences of humans
What is artificial immunity?
- is produced purposefully through medical procedures
Natural immunity
- what is active immunity?
- person develops his/her own response to microbe
- acquires immune memory at the end of the infectious cycle
Natural immunity
- what is passive immunity?
person receives immunity made by another person
IgG - crosses the placenta
IgA - breast milk
Artificial Immunity
- what is active immunity?
- vaccines
- –> person develops immunity and immune response to a vaccine
Artificial immunity
- what is passive immunity
- person receives immunity made by another person
- —>receives antibodies or immune serum
What are the life cycles for:
- passive
- active
passive = immediate protection - but fast life cycle
active = life long memory, improves during response
How do live vaccines stimulate immunity?
- IgA
- cytotoxic T cells
How do killed vaccines stimulate immunity?
IgM & IgG
- opsonisation of bacteria
- neutralisation of toxins
