Lecture 47: Flashcards
1
Q
What is humoral immunity?
A
- immunity mediated by secreted antibodies
- —> involves B cells
2
Q
What does humoral immunity protect you against?
A
- extracellular pathogens IgM - first antibody to be produced, - half life 4 days IgG - half life 4 months IgM & IgG = circulatory infections IgA - mucosal infections
3
Q
What does cell mediated immunity protect you against?
A
- intracellular bacterial and virus infections
4
Q
What is cell mediated immunity?
A
Immunity which involves T cells, macrophages and NK cells
- –> protects you against acute and chronic intracellular infections
- does NOT include antibodies
5
Q
What is the response to acute intracellular pathogens?
- cell mediated immunity?
A
Cytotoxic t cells target antigens
- release of granules —–> cell apoptosis
granzymes activate apoptotic enzymes
6
Q
What is the response to chronic intracellular pathogens?
A
T helper cells up regulate the function of macrophages and NK cells
- —-> unregulated by cytokines
- —–> increased phagocytosis of all pathogens
