Lecture 4-Properties of Gases Flashcards
1
Q
What is the atmospheric pressure at sea level?
A
101 kPa
2
Q
What is the equation to calculate the amount of gas dissolved?
A
Partial pressure x solubility coefficient of the gas
3
Q
What is the pO2 in alveolar air and arterial blood supposed to be?
A
13 kPa
4
Q
What is the pCO2 in alveolar air and arterial blood supposed to be?
A
5.3 kPa
5
Q
What is decompression sickness or the Bends?
A
As a diver goes deeper, nitrogen moves from high to low pressure ie lungs to blood. A slow return to the surface lets nitrogen return to the lungs but swimming up too quickly doesn’t give enough time and can lead to painful gas bubbles in the blood
