privacy is about people

information privacy is the client’s right to control their personal health information that’s collected/used/disclosed

what is confidentiality?

A

the duty to protect information
- information is shared with the health team, some is shared outside the team
- breaking confidentiality is sharing information about the patient without consent

what is personal health information?

A

any identifying info about the clients, in verbal/written/electronic form

ex. health number/pin, care previously provided, pictures of them

privacy legislations

A

PIPEDA governs collection, use, disclosure, retention of personal info during commercial activities

PHIPA meant to address issues specific to healthcare that were not clear in PIPEDA

A

if the patient is under 18 you have the duty to protect experiences of abuse/violence

if the patient is over 18, you cannot, can only provide resources and help therapeutically
