What are access points?

A

Info that is indexed and therefore searchable info about a item. I.e a heading, a main entry (first named author or title), title, ISBN

What is a main entry heading?

A

A heading that is decided to be the main entry by the cataloguer. Based on rules in AACR2. Usually authors name is main entry.

A

Added entries show the other authors, translators, titles, series and org’s by which a client may wish the find the record.

What is a subject heading?

A

A heading assigned to the work so a client looking for info on a particular subject can find it w/o knowing authors or title. Subject headings are standardized and refer to a subject the same way each time.

What are the two basic major classification systems?

A

Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and Library of Congress Classification (LCC).

What does the Dewy Decimal system use to represent subjects?

A

Numbers, or occasionally letters and numbers. For ex:

636.7 classification number
HEW book number (first 3 letter of mail entry)

How does Library of Congress system represent the subject?

A

Letters & numbers. LCC call numbers include the classification number, notation (letter and numbers) that reflects the author or title, and date of publication. Ex:

What is a location symbol?

A

Indicates where an item is housed. Reference may be a “R” or an audiovisual item may be “AV”. They can also indicate a branch or library system. Can be used w/ any classification number.

When making any kind of library search, do you use complete sentences?

A

No. Use terms and phrases. Full sentences will confuse your search return as too many terms are unnecessary or bear too many meanings to be helpful.

What is Boolean Searching?

A

When you have more than one keyword, you can use a special word (a Boolean connector) to tie the word together in your search. Most common ones are “and” and “or.” And will find results that contain all search terms. Or will find results that match any search terms, alone or in combo.
