What is the purpose of libraries?
To connect people with information they need.
What do staff in libraries need to do their job reliably?
Reliable and consistent access to info, communication skills, technical skills to organize and access information.
What are Monographs?
Meaning “produced once.” Used to describe and distinguish printed books from serials. These include: manuscripts, typescripts, computer printouts, pamphlets, ephemera, and newspaper clippings.
What are Serials?
Also called periodicals. Issued at regular or irregular intervals, they all have a common title, and are intended to continue indefinitely. These include: journals, magazines, newspapers, annuals.
What is monographs in serials?
Many libraries treat as monographs, acquiring and cataloguing each item as it arrives. Some libraries require every title in a series forwarded from the vendor once the title is published. These are bought, processed and recorded within the serials subsystem. This is referred to as a “standing order.”
What is a non print material?
This includes monographs and serials, referred to as non-book material. Same processing as monographs and serials, but common practice to subdivide material into categories with similar characteristics: digital info, map and plans and diagrams, pictures, microforms, films and slides, sound recordings, video tapes, artifacts, computer software.
What are non book serials?
Packaged in the same format as non print materials. Subject to own processing routines, and may require different handling. Electronic series are often acquired and managed differently than printed subscriptions.
How are libraries organized?
Like a business, and arranged so people and staff can get information quickly and efficiently.
What is the basic flow of material through a library?
Acquisitions, cataloguing, physical processing, public services, collection maintenance.
