What does Diversity mean to you?
- A state of being diverse, variety
- Ability, socio-economic, race, age, religion, culture, gender, education, etc
- Diversity comes in many forms and makes us different from each other

- To apply a diverse approach you must be open minded and learn from another perspective
What is the diverse approach?
Aiming to respect another as unique and embracing both our similarities and differences
Do we need to change our values to have a diverse approach?
NO! You do not need to change your beliefs, views, or values. Must leave them at the door tho.
Define ethnocentrism.
Seeing things from ones point of view, from our own culture and beliefs.
- Believing their beliefs are superior and culture is found everywhere!
- Natural to an extent but don’t want this
How do ethnocentric people live typically?
Tend to hangout with people from their own culture
Those who look like us and have similar behaviours
Believing our way is the RIGHT way

We don’t have to know everything, just ask the patient or learn on your own time!
- Allows us to learn and connect with them.
- Knowledge is key to be competent
How do we treat everyone in human services.
We treat them with fairness, equality and respect

refers to an ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures
- Depends on continually learning and development of new skills
What are the 4 components of cultural competence
- Awareness of ones cultural view
- Positive attitudes towards other cultures
- Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldview
