A philosophy and process that seeks to transform the LTC from an institutional and restrictive home, to one of choice and empowerment!
True or False
“Culture change a deep personal change on how we view quality of life and not redecorating/changing the building”
TRUE! We must change as health care professionals, it is a choice. Change our view on quality of life for those we serve.
How do traditional LTC homes describe home?
We work there and it is an institution. The building is a “facility” rather than a home
How does a person-centred view describe home?
A place for privacy, it is their HOME and we work where they live. - A place to enjoy intimacy - A place to be alone - Enjoy hobbies ETC
How can we make it feel more like home?
ASK what will make it better
- What is different from here and your old house
- What don’t you like about the facility
- Do you like to wake up early or later
- Bring in certain smells, pillows, colours, etc
ETC
What is the EDEN ALTERNATIVE?
A PCC (person-centred care) approach
- It is committed to transforming care environments into habitats for humans.
- Compassion is the anti-dote for loneliness
- Opportunities to cure helplessness
- Spontaneity as an anti-dote for boredom
