Lecture 4 - Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Name the 3 divisions of CNV, along with their function
Ophthalmic (CNV1); Sensory
Maxillary (CNV2); Sensory
Mandibular (CNV3); Sensory and motor
Where is the intracranial part of the course of CNV?
Inferior to the edge of the tentorium cerebelli between the posterior and middle cranial fossae
What nerve supplies the skin of the lower eyelid?
CNV2
Apart from CNV, which other nerve provides sensory innervation for the face?
Greater auricular nerve (C2, C3)
Which nerve provides sensory innervation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
CNV3
Name the 3 pairs of jaw closing muscles
Masseter, temporalis and medial pterygoid
Where does CNVII leave the base of the skull and then the cranium?
IAM and stylomastoid foramen respectively
What is the function of chorda tympani?
Sensory innervation of taste buds in the anterior 2/3 of the tongue and parasympathetic supply to the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands
Which muscle reduces stapes movement and why?
Strapedius; to protect the internal ear from excessive noise
Which muscle dampens the noise produced by chewing?
Tensor tympani
How do you clinically test CNVII motor function?
Ask the patient to; frown, close eyes tightly, smile and puff out cheeks
What is the intracranial course of CNIX?
Directly towards jugular foramen in the posterior cranial fossa
Which cranial nerve is contained within the carotid sheath?
CNX
How do you clinically test CNXI?
Ask the patient to shrug their shoulders and turn their head to look up towards the opposite side
Where does CNXII leave the base of the skull?
Hypoglossal canal
