Lecture 3 - Spinal Nerves Flashcards
What are you assessing when testing each spinal nerve segment?
Sensory function (dermatomes), motor function (myotomes) and both simultaneously (spinal cord reflexes)
If there is a lesion on the anterior root, what is affected for that specific spinal nerve?
Motor function
Which dermatome supplies the medial malleolus?
L4
Which dermatome supplies the middle finger?
C7
Which dermatome supplies the pubic symphysis?
T12
What are the spinal nerve root levels of the femoral nerve?
L2, L3 & L4
Where would you find the nerve point of the neck?
Superior to the midpoint of the posterior border of the SCM
Name the 4 anterolateral sensory branches of the cervical plexus, along with their nerve roots
Lesser occipital (C2), great auricular nerve (C2, C3), transverse cervical (C2, C3) and supraclavicular nerves (C3, C4)
When examining the myotomes supplied by the brachial plexus, what areas of the body are you assessing?
Muscles of the upper limb and extrinsic back muscles
If I was to examine the postural back muscles, from which spinal levels are the involved myotomes supplied?
T2-L3
When testing shoulder abduction, which muscle and spinal nerve are involved?
Deltoid; C5
When testing flexion of the finger joints, which muscles and spinal nerve are involved?
Digit flexors; C8
When testing extension of the elbow joint, which muscle and spinal nerve are involved?
Triceps brachii; C7, C8
When testing flexion of the wrist joint, which muscles and spinal nerve are involved?
Carpal flexors; C6, C7
When testing flexion of the hip joint, which muscle and spinal nerves are involved?
Psoas major; L2, L3
