Lecture 4 Flashcards
Industrial Hygiene
basic principles of Industrial Hygiene
- anticipate hazards
- recognize hazards
- evaluate hazards
- control hazards
time-weighted average concentration equation
TWA = 1/8 * integral of C (t)
principles of ventilation:
- dilute the contaminant below the target concentration
- remove the contaminant before workers are exposed
2 types of ventilation system
- positive pressure ventilation
- negative pressure ventilation
fans located at the exhaust end of the system, pulling air out. this ensures that leaks in the system draw air in from the workplace rather than expel contaminated air from the ducts into the workplace
negative pressure ventilation
the most common example of local ventilation
hood
a device that either completely encloses the source of contaminant and/or moves the air in such a fashion as to carry the contaminant to an exhaust device
hood
always exposes the worker but in amounts diluted by fresh air
dilution ventilation
airflow prevents worker exposure
hood ventilation
always requires more airflow than local ventilation; operating expenses can be substantial
dilution ventilation
