why did they create the catacombs
- Rome required all dead to be burned
- Jews refused to cremate their dead, insisted their bodies be buried and intact
- found secret places for burials to take place
- usually out side of the walls
why did the Christians take over the catacombs
also refused to cremate, and then discovered what the Jewish people were doing, began to take over the catacombs because they outnumbered the Jews
