Lecture 4 Flashcards
“Xylem is for the……
flow of minerals and H2O”
“Phloem transports…..
sugar so food gets to where its meant to go!”
Name and describe the types of ground tissues
Parenchyma: unspecialized living cells with thin walls
Collenchyma: living support cells with thick cell walls with lots of cellulose
Schlerenchyma: mature to dead support cells with secondary cell wall containing lignin
What are Apical Meristems?
-causes primary growth (lengthening of plant)
-occurs at tips of shoot and roots
-produces new leaves and flowers
What are Lateral Meristems?
-produces bark on trees
-occurs at cambium
-causes secondary growth of plant (widening)
What is meristem?
Meristem is a formative plant tissue usually made up of small cells capable of dividing indefinitely and giving rise to similar cells or to cells that differenciate to produce the definitive tissues and organs.
What is the function of the root?
-water and mineral absorption
-anchor and support
-store starch/carbs
How large can a root system grow?
Root system can be more than 100km in length and have a surface area of 100 m2
What does the root cap do?
The root cap protects the root meristem as it navigates through soil.
