What is Qi?
A
- qi is the root of the human body; the stem and the leaves would dry up without a root.

what are the 6 functions of Qi?
A
- Promoting; growth and development.
- Warming; Warmth is maintained by readjusting Qi.
- Defence; Wei Qi protects the body from exterior attacks.
- Checking; maintains homeostasis.
- Nourishing; Ying Qi or Nutritive Qi.
- Qi Hua: function of the organs e.g. Lung Qi= lung function.

- Yuan Qi.

What is Yuan Qi?
A
- rooted in the kidneys and transported through the body by the San Jiao.
- The greater the Yuan Qi, the greater the Zang-Fu activity and vice versa.
- it is the part of us that is inherited, derived from the pre-heaven essence.
- needs to be supplemented and nourished by food essence.

How can Yuan Qi be depleted?
A
- excess activity and lack of rest long term.
- a prolonged illness which requires more Qi.
- Increased ejaculations for men
- increased pregnancies for women.

What is food Qi (Gu Qi)
A
- the grains of Qi.
- the first stage is the transformation of food into Qi.
- food enters the stomach and it is first rotted and ripened and then transformed into food Qi by the spleen.
- Food Qi rises to the chest (lungs) and combines with air to form Zong Qi (gathering Qi).
- Food Qi also goes to the heart where it is transformed into blood.

What is Zong Qi? (gathering Qi).
A
- formed from the interaction between food Qi and Air.
- closely related to the function of the heart and the lungs.
- assists the heart and lungs to push Qi and blood to the limbs.
- Also gathers in the throat and assists in speech.

What is Zhen Qi?
A
- True Qi
- Last stage of transformation Qi
- Zhen QI- Vital Qi or righteous Qi.
- Zong (gathering) Qi is transformed into true Qi catalyzed by the original Qi.
- assumes two forms of Qi: Ying Qi and Wei Qi.

What is Ying Qi?
A
- Nutritive Qi: interior.
- from food extracted by the spleen and stomach.
- a refined Qi from food, air and Yuan Qi.
- not food Qi which is unrefined.
- Nutritive; nourished the internal organs; closely linked to blood that flows in the channels and blood vessels.

What is Wei Qi?
A
- defends against external pathogens such as wind, heat, cold and dampness.
- protects the muscular surface.
- controls the opening of the pores.
- moistens the skin and hair.
- makes adjustments to the body temperature.
- warms up the Zang-Fu organs

A
- the function of the organs.
- Zang organs- yin organs- solid organs.
- fu organs - yang organs- hallow.

What is blood?
A
- formed mainly from food Qi.
- Food Qi from the spleen and stomach rises to the chest where it is acted upon by Yuan Qi.
- at this point, it is known as blood.
- but blood is not complete (Blood) until it is sent to the heart where the heart turns blood red.

A
- nourishment and moisture; movement of the eyes and the 4 limbs.
- nourishes hair, sinews, bones and bowels.
- the foundation of mental activities; houses the mind.
- circulates with Ying Qi.
- Determines mensturation.

Who is the commander of blood?
A
Qi; qi is yang so it moves blood.

who is blood the mother off?
A
blood is the mother of Qi as it is yin and gives the body nutritional substance to carry.

what is blood’s relation to the organs?
A
- the heart is where the blood is created from food Qi–> the heart governs blood.
- the spleen supports keeping blood in its place; the spleen makes blood.
- The liver stores blood.

What are body fluids?
A
- all the fluids within the body.
- sweat, saliva, urine, tears, digestive juices.
- functions to moisten the skin, muscles, organs, mucous membranes and orifices.
- classified as either Jin (thin) or Ye (thick).
