Lecture 32 Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 6 pathogens
A
virus - H1N1 influenza Fungi - Trichophyton spp. Prions - kuru Protozoa - plasmodium spp. Helminths - ancylostoma dodenale Bacteria - Bacillus anthracic
2
Q
What are Koch’s Postulates
A
the guidelines to show that a specific pathogen causes specific disease symptoms
- The pathogen must be present in every individual with the disease
- A sample of the microorganism taken from the diseased host can be grown in pure culture
- A sample of pure culture causes the same disease when injected in a healthy host
- The microorganism can be recovered from the expirementally infected host
3
Q
What are the exceptions to Koch’s postulates
A
microbes can’t be cultured
pathogens that also can be found in healthy subjects
4
Q
What are the key stages of microbial pathogenesis
A
- adherence to host cells
- invasion of host tissues
- Replication with host tissues
- disease causing damage to host tissues
5
Q
What are exotoxins
A
can be fatal
produced in living bacteria, released into surrounding medium
6
Q
What are the three types of exotoxins
A
- cytotoxins (streptolysis) - causes lysis of red blood cells
- neurotoxins (Botulinum) - causes paralysis
- Enterotoxins (Shiga toxin) - severe dysentery
7
Q
What are Endotoxins
A
cause inflammation
are lipopolysaccharides (LPS) components found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria
strong immune responses
-fever, inflammation, blood clotting, shock
