Lecture 28 Flashcards
What is binary fission and how does it occur
one cell makes two
prokaryotes reproduce asexually by cell division
results in the formation of two genetically identical cells
copies of origin DNA go to opposite sides of the cell
replication splits the cell and two daughter cells form
What is a closed batch culture system
form of cell culturing
limited amount of nutrient
standard method of studying microorganism in culture
method controls not flask
biased towards growing pathogens
What are the four phases of culture growth
lag phase - time to get biosynthetic reaction running
exponential phase - actively dividing cells with no limit for growth
stationary phase - cells stop growing, cryptic growth
survive by consuming lysed cells
death phase - cell death
What does cell growth mean as they are not equal
growth means a balance of death rate and growth rate
What are persistors
dormant so antibiotics killing dividing bacteria are ineffective, meaning a resuscitation of a pathogen in tissue
What do cells need to multiply
a carbon source - macromolecular synthesis
energy source - to drive reactions
reducing power - carriers of electrons/energy e.g NAP/NADP
