Lecture 29 Flashcards
What is microbial ecology
The study of interrelationships among microorganisms and their environments
What is a microbiome
all microorganisms and their genes within a particular environment
What is the chemical energy in bonds used for
commonly ATP
released by the breaking of bonds and used to form bonds
release of energy does redox reactions
What are the anabolic and catabolic processes of microbiology
Food is broken down into products - catabolic
this energy is used in the formation of new bonds as
monomers are made into macromolecules and other cellular components - anabolic
this process can reverse to break bonds and get energy
What is Bacteria redox
the basis for energy transfer
every reaction has opposite
energy from oxidation shuttled through intermediate (NAPH/NADPH)
What are the four types of Trophic and what does a trophic mean
a trophic describes an organisms energy source and carbon source
there are photo (light)
Chemo (chemical) - organic - glucose and inorganic H2S (hydrogen sulfide)
hetero ( from another) decomposer need fixed carbon
Auto (self - from CO2) - fix CO2
this makes photoautotrophs - algae, plants
chemoautotrophs - some bacteria
photoheterotrophs some bacteria
chemoheterotrophs - aerobic respiration
animal, fungi, bacteria
anarobic - few animals, protozoa, archaea
What are the two types of photosynthesis
cyclic and non-cyclic
What is non-cyclic photophosphorylation
electron flow — H2O –> PSII –> PSI –> NADP+
generates O2, ATP and NADPH
What is cyclic photophosphorylation
PSI can work in the absence of PSII
generates ATP but no O2 (anoxygenic)
