Material enters the airway, remains above the vocal folds, and is ejected from the airway (i.e, with cough)
Normal swallow (green)
Material enters the airway, remains above the vocal cords and is not ejected from the airway (i.e. cough)
Residue in laryngeal vestibule but not below level of vocal cords = concern (yellow)
Material enters the airway, contacts the vocal folds and is ejected from the airway (cough)
Normal swallow (green)
Material enters the airway, contacts the vocal folds and is not ejected from the airway (no cough)
Residue in laryngeal vestibule but not below level of vocal cords = concern
Material enters the airway, passes below the vocal folds and is ejected into the larynx and out of the airway
Residue in laryngeal vestibule but not below level of vocal cords = concern
Material enters the airway, passes below the vocal folds and is not ejected from the trachea despite effort
Aspiration with ineffective cough = highly concerned
Material enters the airway, passes below the vocal folds, and no effort is made to eject
Silent aspiration, highly concerned
